Members of Norchester Garden Club met at Matzke Park Butterfly Garden - not for a workday this warm spring day in June 2013 but a Garden Party! Ladies arriving in colorful big hats, and all other guests, were welcomed by lovely background music and festive decorations of balloons, streamers and jars of fresh flowers on all the tables. The party was well attended including our incoming President Janet C. who helped us honor six Past Presidents - Georgeine F., Barbara M., Loretta R., Pattee M., Joan F., and special mention went to Ruth D. who had the distinction of not only being a Past President but also a Charter Member!
We celebrated with yummy food, cold and hot beverages as well as tasty sweets which were all provided by members or the club. Prizes were given for some of the activities which included an ice breaker, a mind twister, and croquet. The party ended with a virtual plant scavenger hunt.
Thank you to the Butterfly Garden Committee Jean R., Barbara M., and Susan B. along with other Zone Leaders Cathy C., Janet C., Georgeine F., Kathleen M., Loretta R. for the fun!
Children's Butterfly Project - April 2013
The April 2013 Matzke Butterfly Garden Childen's Education Program was a huge success! A total of 13 sessions over a period of 5 days involved 231 children and 39 adults from 6 area schools, including Oaks Adventist, Primrose at Crossroads, My Private School, Angel's Academy, Sonlight Windwood Adventure School, and Happy Kids!
Each 45-minute session was jam-packed with activities. NGC member Meda W. told the story of Catherine the Caterpillar to the children gathered in the gazebo. The children then formed "human caterpillars" as they walked around the garden looking for butterflies and caterpillars and learning to identify the various nectar plants in the garden. Each child then crafted their own butterfly art project to take home.
Many thanks to the NGC members that volunteered to make the programs successful: Joan F., Meda W., Carol B., Lorretta R., Cathy C., Susan B., Maudie B., Kathleen B.! Also a big thanks to Meda's 2 granddaughters who also assisted with the programs!
