Matzke Park Projects
In 2001, the Norchester Garden Club partnered with the Association for Better Community Schools to develop a butterfly garden and learning center for Matzke Park in Harris County Precinct 4. Work began work on the park in the fall of 2006. Master plans for the butterfly garden were approved and construction began in March 2007.
Thanks to coordinated efforts and donations of materials and labor from Home Depot and Westco Grounds Maintenance, the Matzke Butterfly Garden was dedicated June 1, 2007.
The Matzke Park Butterfly Garden is home to a wide variety of native and local plants and flowers that attract many varieties of butterflies and some hummingbirds. The Norchester Garden Club provides maintenance and care for the plants and garden.
In the spring of 2008, the garden became an official member of the Monarch Way Station Program. The garden can be seen on www.monarchwatch.org. The Matzke Butterfly Garden is Site # 1905.
The Children's Education Project was developed in 2010 as an on-going project of the Norchester Garden Club. The program provides an active learning experience for school children, daycare children, children with special needs, and for the community.
The focus of the program is to teach children and others that the garden is there to enjoy, to look for signs of the butterfly life-cycle, and to leave the garden untouched for others to enjoy.
Each 45-minute program features a presentation by a master storyteller of the story of Catherine the Caterpillar's life cycle as a Monarch butterfly. This is followed by an age-appropriate activity such as a scavenger hunt and a take-home craft project.
